GARVERIET

Flekkefjord, Norway

2024

The tannery which operated from 1851 to 2013, is a distinctive part of Flekkefjord’s industrial and cultural heritage.

To continue its cultural legacy, while creating value for users and the community, a realistic preservation strategy must be paired with an innovative approach to future building use.

The tannery has strong potential as a model for sustainable architecture—combining climate-friendly construction, adaptive reuse, and transformation of existing structures.

The project also explores “preservation as attraction” and “experimental conservation,” positioning the site as a cultural and architectural landmark. It aims to create a distinctive environment in line with national goals for heritage reuse, offering bold, long-term value and a unique identity for Flekkefjord.
